And now the fear sets in...

Yes, those of you who have stuck with me through all this time on NS...tonight is THE night...I take my college placement exam.  So scary at 38 years old to think that I now need to recall so many things I have NEVER needed to use since highschool 20 years ago like the dreaded ALGEBRA.

I will say, my visit with Leah and Tammy on Saturday in Boston really has helped me overcome some of my fears and worries about the current and upcoming events in my life.  They were both like soothing medicine, a dash of fun and huge amount of love and happiness wrapped up in one...nope, make that two :o)

I know that tonight, while taking my exam, I will be thinking that there are so many people with confidence in me, and that is what is going to pull me through this, hopefully with flying colors.  The verdict should be in tomorrow...I will know whether 'pre' requisite courses will be required based on my test results, so please cross your fingers for me.  All the positive thoughts will surely help.

Have a great day everyone!

Suzanne

I went back to college in my 40's and had to take courses like logic and statistics. I wasn't the greatest math student in high school so I was dreading them. But, I found as an adult student I had better study ethics and motivation to do well.
You will too. Good luck.

You just relax, and let the juices flow.. You know you are ready and willing to let this happen.
If it is sticky then take deep breaths and RELAX!
This is not to hurt but to help you.. these tests are deceloped by lesser than you are capable of..
RELAX! Then tension is because you want it so badly..

At age 38, I did 40 credits in 2 semesters to (finally) finish my bachelors degree in business at the University of Minnesota. It was challenging but very worth it! You can do it!

Don't be scared. Some of us have had to take little life detours and do things in a different order than a lot of other folks. I just started college in February, never took classes before, only school I had after high school was a tech school a few years ago....and I just turned 45 :o)

You CAN do this. I started back to school at age 46 and was really apprehensive. I skated by in high school with little to no study skills. But recently received my Associate's Degree and now working on my Bachelor's Degree, even though I continue to have a full time job and will be 58 years old before I get that degree, I am going to do whatever it takes! YOU CAN DO THIS!

Get out that high school graduation picture and do a mind meld--especially the algebra part!

Seriously, Suzanne, you are so much smarter that that young chickie--you have life smarts, focus and determination that the other girl didn't even know to dream about. And, if you don't score high on a test, what's the worst that could happen? You take a couple more classes, which you will be brilliant in and you'll be prepared for the next level. Nothing wrong with that.

Relax and let your brain work. BTW, studies show that smelling something peppermint helps your concentration--so you might be sure to either wear some peppermint handlotion or chew some peppermint gum. I read that it's used quite extensively in Japan.

Good luck--we are all rooting for you!

Being older is a plus....you know what you need to do....plus, the "social whirl" of your twenties just isn't as important as the goal you are setting for yourself. Focus, relax and kick some butt!!

Sending you warm, positive thoughts on your exam day! I know a thing or two about exam stress, so here's my best stuff:
Allow yourself two minutes during the test to get centered. Put down your pencil, put your palms on the table, put your feet flat on the floor, close your eyes, and take a few good deep breaths. You will be able to access your recall ability MUCH better!
When you get to the math section, read every question all the way before answering (this is from my DH, the math professor). Too many people rush the math section--Don't! Take the time you need.
Break a leg! :)

This is something you could scratch off your list of worries. Doing too well on this test means possibly being placed in a harder math course than you feel comfortable with.
