Although we get spoiled with our summer fruits, there ARE those fruits that come into your local grocery only late autumn and winter from other parts of the world. Locally the apples are very good this time of year, and it seems there are more and more varieties; fuji, honeycrisp, jazz and pink lady are a few of my favorites.
You might want to check online for a fruit schedule to find out what comes out when. For instance, last year I discovered a pumello; never saw one before. It's in the grapefruit family, it's H-U-G-E, and sweeter than even the ruby red. The rind is VERY thick, so when you peel it, you find that the pulp underneath is about an inch thick before you get to the fruit, but VERY tsaty, and only comes out in winter.
See what else comes out late/early in the year, I think you'll be surprised, plus you can use it as an excuse to try new things :o)
