I am a lost for words to express my feeling for the lost of our friend and next door neighbor.
Our next door neighbor and friend, John Gaffney, San Diego, CA, was killed yesterday in the shooting at Ft. Hood. I am so at a lost. John has been my neighbor for years. A quite man, who always welcomed me, he had become a part of our life and he is not longer there. The void is big. I seldom mention Politics, War, or Religion, but at this point, I am more convinced than ever that this war has no merit and no end. It has been a war that "takes" and gives nothing in return. I am devastated. It seems like Nutrisystem is not a priority today. Tom and I are praying for John's wife, Chris , his son Matthew and the rest of his family. He will be missed. Cheers and God be on each of you and protect you in the palm of his hand. Chester out here in the Desert

So sorry for the loss of your neighbor/friend and for the many others who are suffering loss in this tragedy and the one in Orlando. Violence seems to permeate everyone's lives more and more. It's such a senseless loss. Hope you and Tom are okay....dj

I am so sorry for your pain you are going through. I personally feel so helpless when things like this happen and often wonder if it could be me at the mall or church or at work....it could be any of us. Who ever told these people that it was OK to do this? Why would they think they can just take the lives of innocent people? I hate them. They disrupt our peace and sanity we strive for. I have never known someone who knew someone. I would like to send a note or card if you tell me their address. Norma

Not to sound ugly, but I cannot believe the shooter lived. Is it better for the families to see the trial and go through all the media, etc. in the next 5 years or so? Or is it better for the families if he had died and it would all be over? Will questions ever really be answered - I don't think Timothy McVeigh really answered any other questions.....these murderers (when they live) do nothing but cost tax payers even more money and pain when they have the luxury to live after taking lives and shattering lives. Oh God...forgive me for sounding so hateful!!! Norma

Chester, My deepest condolences for you and all of your friends and neighbors. This is a heartbreaking tragedy that was senseless and devastating to our entire country. So many lives lost and so many injured, for what? These people dedicate their lives to protect this country and to have "one of their own" do this is mind boggling. Please know that you are in my thoughts.
Take care,
Tammy

People have such capacity for both kindness and cruelty. And sadly this country is certainly under enough pressure right now to bring out both. Hugs, Chester.

Hi Chester. My thoughts and prayers are with your family as well as John's. My brother is a retired USMC Master Gunny Sgt. and served in Iraq his last year. He now works as a civilian at 29 Palms, CA base. I know the entire base is praying for everyone involved in that horrible tragedy. Our faith in God is our strength. Bless you.

I was reading your blog and then it hit me. He was born in Williston North Dakota. That is where I live.It was on the front page about local ties to Fort Hood Tragedy. It is unreal how everyone is linked together in some way.It said he was an avid baseball card collector, fan of the San Diego Padres and liked to read military novels and also ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle. After the Sept.11th terrorist attacks he tried to sign up again for military service. At first the Army Reserves declined and then he got the call 2 years ago to rejoin. His friend said he wanted to help the boys in Iraq and Afghanistan deal with the trauma of what they were seeing. He supervised a team of six social workers. He will be missed. Prayers to you and to John's family.
