Will lifting weights make me gain lbs?

I'm only on the program a week and I was doing cardio even before I started NS.  I would like to start doing the weight machines at the gym but don't want to pack on lbs at the same time.  I've read where lifting weights will help your body burn more fat which I'm all about.  Is there a period where I may gain weight at first?

Thanks, Teresa

Try not to focus so much on the scale. I know, I fall into the same trap! If the scale shows that yo weigh more, it will most likely be because you're gaining muscle at the same time as losing fat. Muscle weighs more than fat and in the long run will help you burn even more fat!! Put that scale away for a while and go for the weights! :)

There is an exercise discussion board you should put your question on.

I say no - but many people swear they gain weight because "muscle weighs more than fat" - which is a huge myth because one oz. of fat weighs the same as one oz. of muscle....one oz.! It has never made sense to me.

AND fat does NOT turn to muscle. Can't happen!

In the long run, muscle burns more calories than fat so you get more benefit out of ANY exercise. So don't NOT lift weights because you are scared of gaining weight. The benefits far out weigh the negatives.

On the biggest loser, someone made that statement and Jillian jumped down their throat saying that was the biggest crock of you know what and that it was an excuse and NOT true. She said she hated it when people said that because it was not true.

Good luck.

Weight training helped me IMMENSELY with weight loss and toning. Sure, you may not lose any weight ON THE SCALE, but with toned legs, arms, and midsection your clothes will feel loose. You will look at yourself differently in the mirror, and you will feel a whole lot better about what you are doing.

muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have, the faster you will lose not only pounds but inches. One reason men lose faster than women is they have more muscle mass.
