A family affair

When you have the support of others around you, you can be more successful than you ever thought possible. The hardest part is taking the first step in the right direction. Most of the time, this is where some of your best excuses and scape-goats are born. Most of us will try to reason and find a way to justify it anyway possible. I’ve heard all types of excuses or reasons why you can’t or don’t want to, myself included.

I have been going to the gym and not too many people know, I hate the gym I go to! It’s hard to admit this, but I can’t stand going to this place. I pull into the parking lot everyday and I’m always greeted with the task of finding a parking spot with 20 others cars. If a spot opens up, every guns for it causing fender benders and “birds” flying across the lot. If you’re lucky enough to find a spot, when you walk into the gym, every piece of equipment is being used and it’s tough to get a workout in. I mentioned before how this happened to me and I was forced to use different machines I wouldn’t have used if “old faithful” was being used. Last night was the straw that broke my back. I’m not going to this particular gym anymore.

I packed my gym bag for the first time in months and I’m going to another facility a little farther away. I love the ambience of the gym, but when it’s so crowded you can’t get your workout done is extremely frustrating! I hope to use this opportunity to change things up and utilize my knowledge to implement some new exercises. A change of scenery always does me good and helps me focus on the task at hand. My momma always told me “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” So, off to a new gym today for a fresh start and to make some lemonade!

To update all of you on my family, I have some good news! My sister Angie has lost 13 pounds and is exercising on a regular basis. WOOOOHOOOO Angie! I’m so proud of you. Pops, my dad, has made it to his therapy and has been exercising consistently for the last 2 weeks! GO DAD! I’m proud of you too! Both Angie and Pops told me how inspiring I was to them and wanted to experience the same joy and happiness I have over the past couple of months. Pops was telling me how hard it has been for him lately, but he knows it will be worth it in the end when he’s around to baby-sit the grandkids. (I have no kids, with none on the way, and Angie has no kids, with none on the way.) I’m going to leave it up to Angie to have kids first! Were becoming a “fitness” family and it’s a welcomed change from the years of overindulgence and being sedentary.

Roc, that is wonderful that you have been able to change not only your life, but the lives of those closest to you.  We have told you for months that you are an inspiration to many.  I hope that you know that the message your family gave you in person is the same that we would give you if we had the chance.  Thanks man.

Good luck with the new gym.  We all know that this just means that there is a new group of people that will marvel at your intensity and dedication and it will be a new group of people that you get dominate in the gym.  And hopefully a little less toilet paper talk at this gym.

Roc, you definitely have the Midas touch with inspiration.  I've tried to get 2 of my kids & a DIL to start shedding some pounds.  One of the 3 is now "trying to watch what she eats" & walking a bit.  Wish we had the options of gyms close by...would possibly be a great "family affair"...but, maybe I just need to insert a few more smiles, and show my smaller pant sizes to the girls.  Feeling good, smiling tons, and moving freer....great benefits, and I'm so glad your family is responding in such a positive manner.
Thanks for writing...love to read your stuff!

It's great to lose the weight, but it's another NSV when others are motivated by what you are doing. I'm glad you have been there for your family. Sometimes it's hard not to expect the same of them that we do of ourselves. That's when we have to remember that before NS, we were in the same boat as they are. Each has to do it on their own, but seeing your lead has obviously made an impact. My wife has lost 12 pounds on the NS-inspired diet we are creating for her. She's keeping up with me, and I'm thrilled!

That is great, Roc.  I hope I am doing the same with my family - every event used to be focused around food, and not good food at that.  I at least always have healthy options for everyone to eat.  Hard to change my Mom - she's already trying to figure out Easter dinner, sigh, but... baby steps.  :-)  Good job on the lemonade, friend.  WBAD

HEY ROC!!  THAT IS GREAT THAT YOUR DAD AND SISTER ARE TAKING YOUR LEAD AND MAKING SOME HEALTHY CHANGES IN THEIR LIVES.  I KNOW THAT HAS TO MAKE YOU PROUD AND HAPPY FOR THEM.

GOOD LUCK ON THE NEW GYM.  IT CAN'T BE RELAXING WHEN YOU HAVE TO FIGHT YOUR WAY INTO A PLACE AND THEN HAVE TO FIGHT TO GET A MACHINE AND TO KEEP IT FOR A WHILE UNTIL YOU ARE DONE.

HANG IN THERE AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

An inspiration as always, Roc!!!  I'm not surprised you have inspired your family to improve their health.  This is wonderful!!  All it will mean is more time together feeling good ...how can you go wrong there?

Good luck at the new gym.  Hubby and I used to belong to one when we lived in the city and it was a lot like that.  I didn't like the atmosphere myself.  We did entirely different exercises and the only time we were together was in the hot tub or steam room.  I prefer doing it at home .... they ruined me on exercising publicly .. to many "snobs" for me ...lol!  Of course, if I had been a size 5 and built like a brick ..umm .. outhouse ...hehe... I'm sure I would have been accepted more.  Oh well, such is life :)

Hugs,
Cheryl
