New reports on mammograms. Good or Bad?

Have you ever had a mammogram and gotten the bjesus scared out of you? Well have you seen the new reports about not having a mammogram until your 50 now? I think I was about 35 when I had my first one. Yes of course, like everything else they put me in the high risk group. Yes cancer runs in the family, so of course I’m right up there on the Doctors so called list. I went like 7 years without getting a mammogram because my Doctor closed his practice and I didn’t want to look for another one. Yes I did the self exams on occasion. Then I started using my MIL Doctor and boy what a mistake that was. He now closed his practice too. But not before scaring me and my family to death and doing two biopsies on my left breast and telling me I needed to take some preventive medicine for cancer that would put me into post mental pause (ha ha, you know what I mean.). I wont have another one until I fell it necessary again.

Today I am bloated. I don’t know why. I just am. Yuck. TOM left on the weekend, so who knows why. All that gas last night about killed me. Thank you very much NS. Onto today.

Have a great day friends.

Marie

I dunno if I'm on board with the "no grammy til yer 50" boat. I know too many under 50 who've had issues, and some grateful they had been getting checked.

Yea, it sure aint no fun, but the alternative is definitely less fun. Methinks you just got turned onto a couple of dolts, Marie :o)

I am 48 years old and just got back from my 10th of 33 radiation treatments. I was diagnosed with stage 0 Bre*st cancer at the age of 47, after numerous tests and biopsies, I had 2 lumpectomies. My cancer was very hard to detect but some observant doctor picked up on some "oddities" in my mammogram that prompted my eventual diagnosis. Without the early detection in my mammogram – had I waited until I was 50 I would no doubt be at stage 4 or worse. 2 Years of waiting in the life of a cancer cell is a long time to grow! I am all for earlier - not later mammograms. I have NO history of breast cancer in my family – 80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year have no family history. Go have a mammogram now!

Being a Mammographer I must say I'm baffled at the new recommendations. I just turned 59 and have had one done yearly since my early 40s, just because. Every year during my physical one of my doctor's questions is if I do monthly self exams which of course I do. I feel one must make up their own mind regarding if they go by the old or now guidelines (by the way the cancer society doesn't agree with the new ones). Mine is scheduled in a couple of weeks. Betti

I am outraged by the new recommendation and not shocked that the cancer society doesn't agree with them! Just one more way women get the short end of the stick when it comes to health care--I mean, why should Viagra, Cialus and all the rest be covered and not ultrasounds for cervical exams???? I can see that this is a perfect way for health insurance to get out of paying for early detection. Can you tell I'm miffed?

You'd think the insurance companies would prefer preventive measures...much less expensive in the long run to detect early and possibly avoid serious and long term health problems than it is to ignore checkups, etc. and then pay with huge medical bills when someone is diagnosed with a serious illness that might've been minor if detected early. Crazy.... dj

Remember that the new health care plan proposal wants to put ill people over 60 out of their so-called misery. Our government is killing us!!!! One way or another, they want the last word.

I'm sorry I vote for early detection all the way. Better to have the **** scared out of you than to be in a position where it is too late to do anything about it because it started many years before you were "old enough" to have a mammo!

I have had 4 mammos and none came back normal. I went through addtiional tests and being concerned but so very happy that the final outcome was "no cancer". I will continue to get my yearly mammos for as long as I can and I am only 41.

Tell my friend who was diagnosed a week before her 40th birthday that mammos just don't find enough positives before the age of 50 to warrant the cost of mamos beginning at age 40 or my aunt who lost her battle after 4 years. Nope sorry, the govenment is wrong on this one!!!
