Is it possible my baby is 17? Wow!

I believe we just had one of the best weekends EVER at our house!  Although SonBo is 17 today, we celebrated with parties all weekend.  He had his friends over on Saturday night and it was by far the best teenaged party I have ever seen.  There was so much laughter it made my mother's heart glad.  There was a surprise rainshower in the middle of the party and the kids had to come inside - they were so polite - and then rowdy as they took over the living room.  As they left they all commented it was the best party they'd been to.  Our son was overjoyed.

On Sunday we had a BBQ for the adults who have been his lifelong support system.  It went on for about 5 hours and was a blast.  Tonight we will go out for dinner and today he's gone to the gym.  Hus-Bo jokingly calls him GymRat.  We are so glad he's taken an interest in fitness that isn't enforced by his school!  By the time he's back for senior year he should be very fit...and we all know how good that feels!

I mentioned that I was going to make a cool cake for his birthday...well, it was a disaster.  I baked the cakes (it takes several) and spent a good amount of time carving them into the shape of our bulldog.  Then I assembled the layers with frosting - I was a little concerned because the frosting was room temperature and the day was heating up, so I even added toothpicks for extra stability.  Well, I had it completely constructed and had started to frost it and, by golly, the darned thing began to resemble our dog (who, thoughtfully, sat at my feet the entire time as a model).  Here's where it all - literally - fell apart.  I have mentioned that I do several things at one time, right?  Well, I'd put in a load of laundry before I started frosting.  Our machines are under the kitchen counter.  Once I had finished most of the cake (I only had eyes, nose and tongue to complete) I ran to the bathroom...just as the washer hit the spin cycle.  VERY unfortunately, the spin cycle makes the kitchen vibrate...JUST ENOUGH to have my entire cake slide apart and destroy itself.  I had QUITE the tantrum that included throwing (yes, throwing) the destroyed cake into the sink and crying for 10 minutes.  I then pulled my act together and whipped out some cupcakes.  I think I was the most disappointed...now I feel compelled to make that bulldog cake.  ARGH!

Well, I am off to walk the dog and get ready to go out with my men.  I have to say I am pretty content these days.  I am a lucky woman...despite the cake disaster!

Peace and joy ~ Shannon

Love the cake story! I have had more kitchen disasters than I can count, but baking was never my specialty. There were quite a few inedible meals though.

I was waiting to hear how all the partying had gone. Glad it went well for you and especially for the birthday boy!

Keep on blogging! We love hearing from you!

17 --- I hear ya. When I hugged my 19 year old before he went off to the Air Force in June I felt the same way.... I reminessed about him as a toddler.... :) They grow so fast.

Loved your cake story --- made me laugh and that is exactly what I needed today.

thanks -- have a wonderful night with your men.

Shannon, I thought you were going to say DogBo ended up with the cake (thinking it had slid off onto the floor). You could shape the cupcakes into a dog shape. I see different shapes all the time at the store. Have a great night out with the guys. Betti

I feel bad for you and your cake fiasco (damn spin cycle, anyway)...and I totally understand being frustrated enough to throw food and cry!!

I bet the cupcakes were a big hit, but I'm sure you'll keep working on the bulldog cake till you can make it in your sleep.

Have a wonderful night "out with the boys"!!!

Yes, I CAN picture a grown-a$$ woman having a temper-tantrum over a bulldog cake...LOL!! You're allowed, it's in the "Because I'm A Woman, That's Why!" rule book, chapter 17.

And YES I can believe your "baby" is 17...after all, MY baby is 23!!!

I'm so glad your parties were so much fun. There are many times my NS gang does fun stuff that sounds so cool I wish I lived close enough to stop in and enjoy it myself, and your get-togethers always make the list :o)

....by the way, I recall hearing MANY stories about what the spin cycle of the washing machine can do, but this is the first time I ever heard anything that included pastry....new one on me, GF!!

By the way - I reread my post and please do not think I was laughing at you -- I just love how clear you put things and I imagined the spin cycle shaking up your cake and it falling flat like an episode of "I Love Lucy" and it made me laugh. Plus when you were given lemons -- you made lemonaide -- nothing stopped you and you will make that darn dog cake a success if it kills ya... :)

Hopefully - this clarifies my original post just a little... :)

I wish I were three with you kiddo. I love to bake and I would totally be happy to help you try to make that cake again. So sorry it kind of spun out of control there. I am sure SunBo appreciated all the effort and hard work you put into putting these parties together for him in spite of this little setback. It sounds like you guys really know how to celebrate.
