I believe we just had one of the best weekends EVER at our house! Although SonBo is 17 today, we celebrated with parties all weekend. He had his friends over on Saturday night and it was by far the best teenaged party I have ever seen. There was so much laughter it made my mother's heart glad. There was a surprise rainshower in the middle of the party and the kids had to come inside - they were so polite - and then rowdy as they took over the living room. As they left they all commented it was the best party they'd been to. Our son was overjoyed.
On Sunday we had a BBQ for the adults who have been his lifelong support system. It went on for about 5 hours and was a blast. Tonight we will go out for dinner and today he's gone to the gym. Hus-Bo jokingly calls him GymRat. We are so glad he's taken an interest in fitness that isn't enforced by his school! By the time he's back for senior year he should be very fit...and we all know how good that feels!
I mentioned that I was going to make a cool cake for his birthday...well, it was a disaster. I baked the cakes (it takes several) and spent a good amount of time carving them into the shape of our bulldog. Then I assembled the layers with frosting - I was a little concerned because the frosting was room temperature and the day was heating up, so I even added toothpicks for extra stability. Well, I had it completely constructed and had started to frost it and, by golly, the darned thing began to resemble our dog (who, thoughtfully, sat at my feet the entire time as a model). Here's where it all - literally - fell apart. I have mentioned that I do several things at one time, right? Well, I'd put in a load of laundry before I started frosting. Our machines are under the kitchen counter. Once I had finished most of the cake (I only had eyes, nose and tongue to complete) I ran to the bathroom...just as the washer hit the spin cycle. VERY unfortunately, the spin cycle makes the kitchen vibrate...JUST ENOUGH to have my entire cake slide apart and destroy itself. I had QUITE the tantrum that included throwing (yes, throwing) the destroyed cake into the sink and crying for 10 minutes. I then pulled my act together and whipped out some cupcakes. I think I was the most disappointed...now I feel compelled to make that bulldog cake. ARGH!
Well, I am off to walk the dog and get ready to go out with my men. I have to say I am pretty content these days. I am a lucky woman...despite the cake disaster!
Peace and joy ~ Shannon
